Preferisco
This word is often used inappropriately because students sometimes assume that "preferisco" equates to saying "my favourite".
It would be a mistake to say:
Preferisco la pasta (unless you are asked to make a choice amongst a number of dishes)
When you want to express a preference you need to say:
Il mio piatto preferito è la pasta.
Altro esempio: Cosa preferisci, il gelato alla vaniglia o al cioccolato?
Preferisco il gelato alla vaniglia
In the latter case the choice is between two or more things, hence the use of PREFERISCO (instead of PREFERITO!)
